Research Activities:

I am an adolescent psychiatrist with specialty training in mood disorders, whose research focus has been on mapping the early natural history of mood disorders in youth at familial high-risk, and studying the neurobiological underpinnings.  This work has resulted in describing for the first time, the early clinical stages in the development of bipolar disorder and identifying biopsychosocial risk factors. Furthermore, this research has emphasized the importance of considering familial risk of psychiatric disorders and suicide in improving the early detection of emerging serious psychiatric disorders.  Finally, this work has also illustrated the non-specificity of the early manifestations of serious psychiatric disorders in high-risk youth, as well as the effectiveness of indivudlaized or tailored treatments.
