Research Activities:

Evaluating health outcomes in patients with paediatric rheumatic diseases

Primary Area of Research:

My research focus is in measuring health outcomes in children and youth with paediatric rheumatic diseases. Of particular interest is measuring and improving health-related quality of life in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). I am also involved in studies using information technology modalities (e.g. skype, iPhone apps) to facilitate self-management skills in youth with JIA and enhance shared decision-making in this population.

An additional clinical focus is the population of patients with localized scleroderma (also known as morphea), a rare disease that can lead to significant deformity and disability. I am establishing a clinical program at the Alberta Children's Hospital that will use a standardized approach for the assessment and management of these patients. Also, I am interested in studying the immunologic basis for morphea in collaboration with translational researchers. Given the rarity of this condition, this program will provide a unique opportunity to better understand the clinical course of morphea and its response to various treatment protocols.
