Technological and Research Interests

Dr. Pon's technological interests span a broad spectrum of nucleic acid oriented technologies; everything from novel uses of synthetic oligonucleotides and the development of nucleic acid-based drugs through to novel chemistries and applications of next-generation DNA sequencing.

Dr. Pon’s position as an adjunct Professor involves both service and research. As the director of UCDNA Services Dr. Pon manages core service facilities for both DNA/RNA synthesis (established 1985) and automated Sanger DNA sequencing (established 1992).

Dr. Pon is also a staff member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) in the Cumming School of Medicine where he helped establish the ACHRI Genomics and Bioinformatics Platform in 2010. This genomics platform has since been renamed as the Centre for Health Genomics and Informatics. The Centre offers a wide range of next-generation sequencing (NGS) services, i.e. genome, exome, metagenome, amplicon and transcriptome sequencing, on several different NGS platforms.

Research Activities:

Whole genomic analysis through DNA sequencing technology; improving the synthesis of nucleic acids through organic chemistry DNA/RNA synthesis
