Dr. Nathalie Jetté appointed department head, Clinical Neurosciences

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) are pleased to announce the joint appointment of Dr. Nathalie Jetté, MD, as the department head of Clinical Neurosciences, CSM, and Zone Clinical Department Head, Clinical Neurosciences, Calgary Zone, AHS. The appointment takes effect May 1, 2023.

Dr. Jetté will take over the roles held by Dr. Rajiv Midha, MD, the current department head of Clinical Neurosciences at CSM and AHS, Calgary Zone.

Dr. Jetté is an adjunct professor in the departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Community Health Sciences at the CSM. She is also a professor of Neurology and Population Health Science and Policy, and the Bludhorn Professor of International Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), NY.

Dr. Jetté is an epilepsy specialist and neurological health services researcher. She completed an undergraduate degree in biology and a master’s in neurosciences at McMaster University, attended medical school and completed a neurology residency at the University of Ottawa, and followed with a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy, at Columbia University, NY. 

She has expertise in the management of complex epilepsies and the surgical evaluation of people with epilepsy. She is the vice-chair of Clinical Research, Neurology and the Chief of the Division of Health Outcomes and Knowledge Translation Research across the ISMMS health system. Her leadership in epilepsy care, education and research has been widely recognized and she has carried this forward as a teacher and mentor.

As part of her research program, Dr. Jetté studies appropriateness and quality-of-care, disparities in care, health outcomes and psychiatric comorbidities, and determines how best to optimize these outcomes for people living with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Her team uses a variety of data sources and statistical approaches to study health outcomes and to develop prediction tools and decision models to help clinicians provide the best possible care.

Dr. Jetté was elected as a fellow of the American Epilepsy Society, the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurological Association. She is a past president of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy, past chair of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and chair of the ILAE Standards and Best Practice Council.
