FOIP repeal and new access to information and privacy legislation in Alberta
The Government of Alberta has updated Alberta’s public-sector access to information and privacy legislation by repealing the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) and replacing it with two new pieces of legislation:
- The Protection of Privacy Act (POPA)
- The Access to Information Act (ATIA)
These changes took effect on June 11, 2025. The new legislation separates access to information and privacy into two distinct frameworks.
In response, the University of Calgary is commencing work on an updated privacy management program, which will include a full review of all privacy and information management policies to ensure compliance with the new legislation.
As part of this transition, the FOIP Office has been renamed the Access and Privacy Office. This office remains the central contact point for access to information and privacy-related inquiries, including formal access to information requests (formerly “FOIP requests”). Updated guidance resulting from these changes will also be posted on the Access and Privacy Office website in due course.
If your unit or area has questions about the implications of this change, please contact the Access and Privacy Office at accessandprivacy@ucalgary.ca.
