I survived all seven activities on Active Living Day

Doing every single thing available in one day, to make up for two years of not taking advantage of free Active Living membership for students

At the beginning of every academic term, I always tell myself that this is the year I’m going to be more active and actually use the Fitness Centre and other recreational facilities on campus. But two years passed, and... nothing changed. Well, now that I’m in my third year, I figured there was no better time to start than at Active Living Day! So last week, I stopped by and was finally able to redeem myself.

This fall, Active Living Day included seven activities to try out for free, free swag, and a chance to be entered into a draw for a prize for every activity I tried out. To make up for two years of not using my Active Living Membership, I decided to push myself and try all seven activities. I have to admit, it ended up being less of a punishment and more of a fun challenge!

What is Active Living Day?

Active Living Day is an all-day event that takes place once per term (September and February). It allows students to explore the different recreational facilities available on campus and what they have access to as Active Living members.

The day began by checking in at the Kinesiology Atrium. I dragged along my friend Winnie so I could have a buddy to try everything out with. After picking up our Active Living Day passport, we headed to the obstacle course to start collecting stamps for prizes.

Favourite activity of the day

What surprised me was that my favourite activity out of the seven was the Knockout Strength class, aka kickboxing. I didn’t know what to expect because I never could’ve imagined myself boxing. But our coach Christina was very enthusiastic and I left feeling more energized.

Something I discovered

Before Active Living Day, I had no idea that there was climbing wall on campus, so I was really looking forward to seeing it, and it did not disappoint. Reaching the top felt extremely satisfying, and my favourite part was slowly descending from the wall after reaching the top—I had to go back for more rounds.

What I found challenging

The activity that challenged me the most was ice skating. I had trouble with stopping and balancing, but the coaches were patient and broke things down step by step. I got to learn a lot and I felt more confident on the ice at the end.

Well, was it worth it?

In the end, I was sore, tired, hungry and sweaty. But I felt accomplished. It really wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be, and I’m glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. The fitness goals I set for myself also seem more achievable now compared to before.

Don’t be like me and spend two years being afraid of trying something new. I encourage you to go to the next Active Living Day during the winter term. Bring someone if you’re scared. The worst thing that could happen is that you don't like it, which is totally fine. Just leave and try the next one. The best thing that could happen? Finding out about facilities you didn’t know about, discovering something new that you enjoy, and maybe even making a new friend!

The next Active Living Day will be coming up in the winter semester. Give it a shot!
