Welcome, Tom Horton

Mitacs research intern from the United Kingdom
Tom Horton

The Department of History welcomes Tom Horton, an undergraduate history student from the University of Leicester, in the United Kingdom. Tom is in Calgary for a 12-week Mitacs Globalink Summer Research Internship, working with Dr. Beau Cleland on his project exploring the history of the kidnapping and enslavement of free Black people outside the boundaries of the United States in the mid-nineteenth century. He is working with a variety of primary sources, including newspapers, consular records, British Colonial Office correspondence, and more, to help identify cases and track down information about the victims, perpetrators, and their fates.

Tom has enjoyed getting to know Calgary and Banff, although “getting snow in May was a new experience for me.” He hopes to take his summer research experience and apply it to completing his own extensive research project next year.
