Werklund School Mourns the Loss of Well-Known Instructor

Barry Hollowell remembered for his compassion, passion for teaching

The Rt. Rev. Barry Hollowell passed away peacefully on August 17 at the Sarcee Hospice in Calgary.

Born in 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was an accomplished academic, earning numerous post-secondary degrees, including a PhD in Counselling Psychology from the University of Calgary (’12).

Prior to his career in counselling psychology, Rev. Hollowell served the Anglican Church for 31 years as an ordained priest, rising to the order of bishop.

Along with the many hours he spent in private practice as a registered psychologist, Barry Hollowell also served as a sessional instructor in the Werklund School of Education for many years, where he was respected and appreciated by the many graduates students in Counselling Psychology with whom he engaged.

“Barry was respected and loved by faculty and students alike,” says Michael Zwiers, assistant professor and chair of Educational Studies in Counselling Psychology in the Werklund School.

Rev. Hollowell also believed in supporting students connected to disciplines focused on the human services.  Following his wife’s passing, he established a graduate student award that is presented alternately to a student in Educational Psychology, Nursing, or Social Work.

A Celebration of the Rt. Rev. Barry Hollowell’s life will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at The Anglican Parish of Christ Church, 3602 - 8 Street S.W. beginning at 11:00 a.m.
